Where I come from

I grew up in Southern Virginia, with regular trips to visit family just outside Philadelphia. I like to say I inherited southern hospitality with a side of northern sensibility. My father was a minister, and I remember watching him deliver powerful messages—full of heart, truth, and care. But what struck me, even back then, was how hard it was to get people to act on those messages.

Looking back, I realize: a message is only as strong as its call to action—and the ability to help people get behind it.After high school, I went to Temple University in Philadelphia and majored in Film and Media Arts. I was drawn to storytelling early—the structure, the subtext, the power of what goes unsaid. Film gave me a language for what I’d been sensing my whole life: that story moves people more than instruction ever could.

Where my Millennial Story begins

2006 is where my Millennial story really begins. I graduated college with a degree, a mountain of student debt, and a clear desire: to work in entertainment.

So I packed up, moved to Los Angeles, and landed a job at a talent agency. I learned the ropes fast—how to take notes, make calls, keep quiet, and read the room. But while I was figuring out the industry, I was also waking up to something harder: the adult world wasn’t what it had been sold as.

The Great Recession hit. The sub-prime mortgage crisis unraveled everything. Writers went on strike. Actors followed. A college degree felt like a receipt for something no one was delivering. The promises were off. And for the first time, I started asking: if the old system doesn’t work, what will?

Democratized Opportunities

The strikes also spotlighted something else: the rise of Reality TV—and with it, the beginning of what was then called “New Media.” Today, we just call it social media.

I left the office job, sensing a shift. People weren’t just staring at the glass ceiling anymore—they were looking out the window. Opportunity wasn’t locked behind gatekeepers anymore. It was everywhere, if you had the courage to move.

Social media cracked everything open. Suddenly, creatives, founders, and small businesses could speak directly to their people. No middleman. No permission slip. Marketing started to look more like community. Messaging started to sound more like conversation. The industry, for all its polish, still hadn’t caught up to that kind of intimacy.

But I wanted to learn it from the inside.

Media & Community

I left my office job and did what a lot of creatives do when they’re trying to find their way—I worked a little bit of everything. Freelance gigs, side hustles, anything that let me stay curious and keep learning. Somewhere in that mix, I discovered entrepreneurship—not just as a hustle, but as a creative path.

One of the turning points was producing the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles. The staff and filmmakers there embodied something I hadn’t seen enough of: media as a tool for connection, not just recognition. Community wasn’t an afterthought—it was the driving force. And when you pair media with real human connection, it stops being noise and starts becoming movement. Creatively. Professionally. Spiritually.

Turning the Lens on Myself

From there, I began making content. I had always dreamed of directing feature films—but what surprised me was how powerful it felt to turn the lens inward. To curate my own story, not for spectacle, but in service of something real.

I started speaking openly about my recovery from Binge Eating Disorder and morbid obesity. It wasn’t easy—but it felt necessary. I wanted other people, especially men, to know they weren’t alone in that kind of struggle.

Creating Collective Resonance

Over time, those stories found their way to people who needed them. I was honored to contribute to expanding the conversation around eating disorders in men—drawing attention from the National Eating Disorder Association and being invited onto platforms like The Mental Illness Happy Hour and other podcasts. What began as personal survival became collective resonance.

My Brother's Story

Around that time, I lost my brother to suicide. I flew home for the funeral with a camera in my bag because something in me knew I had a story to share.

Back in LA, I turned it on and spoke. Not as a creator—just as a brother trying to process something unthinkable. I shared what it felt like to be the sibling left behind.

The response was immediate. People didn’t just hear the story—they felt it. Not because it was polished, but because it was conscious. I wasn’t selling a message. I was letting the moment speak for itself.

The Seed that became MSP

That experience changed how I saw media. Content doesn’t have to be a pitch. It can be a presence. When we share from that place—not to persuade, but to connect—we invite people into something more than just consumption. We create experiences. And it’s from that place that support, customers, confidence, and even loyalty grow.

That was the seed of Matt Shep Productions: a space to help creators and conscious entrepreneurs show up with clarity, not compulsion. To lead with mission, but never manipulation. And to build platforms rooted in trust, not performance.
